Activity - Make a Difference Day!
Call it "Make A Difference" "Pay it Forward" or a "Random Act of Kindness" - today (Saturday, October 22) is National Make A Difference Day!
Random acts of kindness don't have to be big. They are as simple as giving someone an unexpected compliment, inviting someone to have an ice cream cone, doing yardwork for an elderly neighbor, making someone feel special or beautiful or loved. The person who does the random act of kindness doesn't expect anything in return - they just want to make the world a better place. They want to make a difference!
You can read more about Make a Difference Day here: http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-make-a-difference-day-fourth-saturday-in-october/
And you can read about ways to get involved here: http://mentalfloss.com/article/87407/11-little-things-you-can-do-make-difference
Here are stories by people who have benefited from random acts of kindness: https://notalwayshopeless.com/
QUESTIONS
Have you ever heard the term "Pay it Forward"? Look up the term on the internet. What does it mean? Give an example.
There is also a movie called "Pay it Forward" - have you seen it?
Have you ever done something nice for someone you didn't know?
Has someone you didn't know ever done something nice for you?
Suggest a project for the HTL to do to make a difference in the Gemeinde Trieben.

Dear ,
It’s your
final year of technical college in Austria, and there is so much to do! You must be under a lot of stress. What is your attitude to school right now?
Are you able to get all your work done for your classes? Are you eating and
sleeping okay? You should take time to
do things you want to do instead of working all day and all night. Going out with friends or being with your
family can often help you de-stress (although sometimes they can also distract
you from your work). Do you have any
hobbies you can devote your attention to, so you aren’t always thinking about
your diploma thesis or the prom? Do you
have a time management strategy? Sorry
to ask so many questions, but we haven’t had much time to chat!

Idea for English Activity Journal - Creepy Clowns
(If you don't have your journal, you may write this entry on a piece of paper and add it to your journal later. Or you can leave a comment here on the blog!)
Have you heard about the "creepy clowns"? Clowns are appearing (erscheinen) all over the world and no one knows why. Here is a video that explains the craze:
Ronald McDonald is the most famous clown of all. But because of all the creepy clowns, Ronald McDonald is making fewer appearances. Read all about it on People Magazine.
QUESTIONS
Is it normal for people in Austria to hire clowns for children's birthday parties?
Where do you see clowns in Austria?
Do you like clowns or do you have coulrophobia (fear of clowns)?
Do you have a favorite clown?
Look up the history of some famous clowns
Did you know a clown's make up is copyrighted? Check out this article on Atlas Obscura!
If you could be a clown, what would your make up look like and why???
Have you ever seen the movie or read the book "It" by Stephen King?

Idea for English Activity Journal - Happy Fluffernutter Day!
(I know not everyone has their English Activity Journals, but you can write a text about this article and paste it in your EAJ when you get it back next week! OR you can write a comment in the box below!)
Article: http://mentalfloss.com/article/86283/gooey-history-fluffernutter-sandwich
WRITE A TEXT ABOUT PEANUT BUTTER
Have you ever eaten peanut butter?
How did you eat it? (alone on a spoon? in a candy bar? on bread? What kind of bread? as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? what kind of jelly? did you also use butter?)
What kind of peanut butter did you eat? There's chunky, creamy, and natural.
Do you like peanut butter?
Would you like to try peanut butter?
Are you allergic to peanuts?
Have you ever eaten marshmallows?
How did you eat them? (alone out of the package? roasted over a campfire? in Rice Krispie treats? in a candy bar? as marshmallow fluff?)
What do you think about a combination of peanut butter, marshmallow fluff on white sandwich bread? Does it sound good? Do you think it's healthy?
