WRITING A LETTER OF COMPLAINT - Due Monday, November 24

This semester there have been several incidents involving the student break room at the HTL Trieben.  The director is worried that students are becoming increasingly destructive, and he has decided to install a surveillance camera complete with microphone in the break room.  The system will cost about €750-1000 and the parent association (Elternverein) will have to pay for it.

Write a letter of complaint to the director in which you:

                  * Describe the problems with the break room this semester

                  * Express your concerns about student privacy

                  * Suggest alternative methods of monitoring the break room

You may, of course, address other issues in this letter, such as the cost.

Make sure you follow the directions for a letter of complaint on page 34 of Focus on Modern Technology 4/5.  Before you submit the assignment, PROOFREAD! 

                  * Does your work reflect the assigned task?

                  * Did you use proper punctuation, capitalization, paragraphs and spelling?

                  * Did you include addresses, date, greeting and appropriate closing?

                  * Did you use the correct register for a letter to the director?

                  * Is your letter something you can be proud of?

As always, you should do your own work.  You may, of course, use dictionaries or phrases you’ve learned from our short study of surveillance, but don’t resort to Google Translate or copying from your classmate. Such work will not be evaluated.

3C - Revised Prompt for WiFi Blog Entry

For Thursday, November 20, prepare an outline/handout for your 10-12 minute presentation.  The handout should reflect what you will talk about, including organization and sources.

REVISED PROMPT FOR BLOG ENTRY - WIFI

You are one of the authors of “TechnoEnglish,” a blog where HTL students can practice writing (and reading) English.  Write a blog entry informing your schoolmates about the risks of wireless technology.  In your blog entry, you should:

·      Summarize the controversy about WiFi and health risks (2-3 sentences),

·      Express your point of view about the health risks of wireless technology in schools,

·      Suggest ways in which people can lower their risk.

Your blog entry should be 140-160 words.

HELPFUL HINTS

            * Give your blog entry an interesting title

            * Your introduction should indicate what the entry is about, but it should also build reader interest (rhetorical questions are good for this! you can also ask your readers to comment on your post)

            * You may address your readers (in this case, English students at the HTL)

5C - Writing prompt for gun attitudes article, due Thursday, November 20

You are writing a guest article for an American high school newspaper about the difference in gun attitudes between America and Austria.  You have to be somewhat objective, but you may express your own opinion.  In your article,

·      Explain the legal uses of guns in Austria

·      Compare statistics of gun deaths in the United States and Austria

·      Express how gun behaviour influences European perception of the U.S.

HINTS:           Make sure you give your article an interesting title

                        Your introduction should indicate what the article is about, but it                                   should also build reader interest.           

                        Use a new paragraph for each bulletpoint

                        Use fitting examples (are they relevant and to the point?)

                        Conclusion should sum up your argument

                        Rhetorical questions build interest

                        Encourage reader to continue reading, either through direct address or more indirect methods

2C - Homework for Thursday, November 20

1) Do exercise 5b on page 106 of Chapter 7 (not Chapter 7 in your textbook, but the pages you printed out from Lehrer - Schüler Tausch).  Use the episode of "Jonny Quest" that we watched in class on November 13.  Explain why you think everybody should see it.  Use the words and phrases we collected in class, and write three or four sentences about the series answering these questions:

What is the title of the series?
What kind of series is it?
Who are the characters?
What is it about?
What is your opinion of this series (based on the episode we saw)?
Would you recommend this series to your friends?

2) Write an outline/handout of your presentation to turn in for feedback.  Your outline/handout should reflect what you will talk about in your 8-10 minute presentation, including organization and sources.  On Thursday, November 20 you will sign up for time to give your presentation.

For Monday, November 24, do the following exercises in the textbook, Focus on Modern Technology 1

1) Read the article on page 34
2) Do exercise 1 on page 35 (Leseverständnis)
3) Do exercise 2 on page 35 (Vokabel)
4) Do exercise 3 on page 36 (simple past, positive and negative statements)
5) Do exercise 4 on page 36 (questions in simple past)
6) Do exercise 5 on page 37 (past progressive, positive statements and questions)
7) Do exercise 6 on page 37-38 (you do not need to work with a partner... using past simple and past progressive)

You should write out the answers in your book, so you can a) prove you have done the work, b) answer the questions in class on Monday and c) correct your own answers.

Looking ahead, we will have a grammar revision (#2) on December 1 over past simple, past progressive (don't be surprised if there is also present simple, present progressive on this revision as well!)
