8C - "Homework" for Monday, March 23

This is a time for you to catch up!  We have been talking about eco-tourism.

In particular, attitudes towards eco-tourism (p. 52 of your textbook)
and ways a resort can be environmentally friendly (pages 53-54 of your textbook)

Here is an online version of the article on pages 53-54 of your textbook (it's not exactly the same, but similar enough for review!)  http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/catalyx-and-ramona-tribe-start-work-on-100-off-grid-renewable-energy-eco-tourism-resort-62027202.html

Here are the homework exercises you could have done.  Monday, March 23 will be the last time you may hand them in for points: http://ennsvalleyenglish.blogspot.co.at/2015/03/8c-homework-for-monday-march-16.html

Some vocabulary you absolutely, positively have to know to discuss this topic!
environmentally friendly
environmentally responsible
sustainable
renewable
CO2 emissions
facilities
to ruin = to destroy
to damage = to harm
marketing spin
adverse environmental effects
impact

4AHK - Homework options for Tuesday, March 24

Make sure you look at page 67 (vocabulary).  In order to discuss the topics in this chapter, start writing vocabulary you don't know in your vocabulary notebook.

To help with vocabulary, do the following exercises (write out full sentences on a separate piece of paper to hand in)

1) page 56, exercise 1 - Fill in the gaps with the words fom the wordbank IN YOUR BOOK (Do NOT rewrite the full text).  But use the SAME WORDS in the wordbank to produce a short text on either A) what are the ironies in Ms. Montag's story? OR B) Give your opinion about Heidi Montag's choice to have so many surgical procedures.

 OR

2) page 62, exercise 4 - Pair the VERB on the left with the NOUN PHRASE on the right.  Thewrite a sentence using the new phrase that means the same thing as sentences 1-5.

OR

3) page 63 - Match the QUESTIONS on the left with the ANSWERS on the right.  Then explain IN ENGLISH what the words in italics mean.

You may, of course, do any or all exercises!

1HAS - Homework Options for Tuesday, March 24

1) Read the text on page 54 and answer the true/false questions (5 pts).
 OR
2) Write a summary (Zusammenfassung) about the text on page 54.  To write a summary, pick out the important facts from the text by choosing the most important fact from each paagraph (Absatz) and try to put it in your own words.
OR
3) Practicing tenses:  On pages 6-7, do exercise
3b (13 pts)
OR 3c (8 pts)

Write out the full exercise on a piece of paper to turn in.

You do not have to do all of these exercises - do the ones you want to do!

1C - Homework for Monday, March 23

1)  Reread the text about baseball.  Write a summary about the article.  Include (in your own words):  * the structure of major league baseball in the U.S.
 * the importance of the World Series
 * where and when baseball began
 * popularity of baseball in the U.S.
 * the basics of baseball (object of the game, basic equipment)

NOTE:  Do NOT add information that is not in the text.  Do NOT add your opinion to the end.

2)  Watch this video (in German) to get an overview of baseball.  Of course, we will talk about (and play!) baseball in English!  Know what these words mean in English: pitcher, base, inning, run, safe, umpire, out, flyout, groundout, strikeout, strike zone, scoreboard,

3) Now try it in English! Here are some more words you need:  offense, defense, pitcher's mound, catcher,  bat, batter, hit, home run, grand slam, swing, miss, foul ball, glove, ball, forceout, tagout, diamond, infield, outfield, first base, second base, third base, home plate, shortstop, dugout

4AHK - Homework options for Tuesday, March 17

For Tuesday, March 17, you can

1) Find someone on the internet who displays extreme body modification:  tattoos, piercings (keep it clean!), extreme weight loss, overweight, underweight, plastic surgery success story, plastic surgery disasters, extreme sports bodies (body builders, wrestlers, people who use anabolic steroids). Then introduce the person to the class in a one minute talk.

Example:  This is Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1970s.  He won the Mr. Universe title and then was Mr. Olympia seven times. He achieved his massive body (his chest was 145 cm, his arms were 50 cm and his thighs were 72 cm) partly by taking steroids. His family was rather poor when he was growing up in Austria.  His father was abusive, and preferred his older son, Meinhard, over Arnold.  It is possible that Arnold started training to be a body builder because he wanted to be his own individual - and there was a lot of money in body building back in the day.

2)  You may also give a 2-3 minute presentation on customer service, as we outlined in class today.

3) We will plan to do some St. Patrick's Day related exercises in class.
