5C - Tasks for Thursday, September 14 (in class)

You are working as an English language assistant in Japan, where they learn only to read and write English.  You are giving a talk about the benefits of learning to speak a language.  In your talk you should:
·         * Give reasons why speaking is a more useful communication skill than writing (think in terms of professional and private life)
·         * Explain what skills are needed to pass the English oral Matura
·        *  Suggest ways in which Japanese students can improve their English speaking skills (remember, you are their English language assistant!)

You are speaking (in English!) to the lower classes at the HTL about their English requirement.  You need to make sure they understand that, even though most students choose the oral Matura, they still need to have good writing skills.  In your talk you should:
·         * Outline the benefits of being able to write in English (think in terms of professional and private life)
·         * Explain what skills are needed to pass a written English test at the Matura level

·         * Suggest ways in which HTL students can improve their written English

Correction of blog entry:

WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO?

Is anyone else bummed that summer is over?

I  actually enjoyed my summer holidays this year.  Usually I am totally exhausted at the end of the semester and it takes me weeks to catch up on sleep.  As a result I have no desire to do anything for school.  However this summer was different. I took time to sort through two years of school papers.  Moreover I was able to plan for the next school year.

The highlight of the summer for me was my family’s annual trip to Minnesota where we rented a cabin.  My parents, who are getting on in years, live in Iowa, so we drove 500 miles over two days to the North Shore of Lake Superior.  While we were there we simply relaxed – we went out to eat, played cards, went canoeing, and read books which I never have time for during the school year.  We even saw the solar eclipse!

But all good things must come to an end.  I am happy to be back at school where I can finally practice my work-life balance skills.  Of course, there will be challenges but I think it is going to be a good year.  What do you think?
