1) keep writing in your activity journals!
2) Look at the vocabulary for Unit 4 (Keeping Fit, p. 46-47)

Activity - The Automator

Y'all know that I love the site MentalFloss.  But today I saw the tab called "The Automator."

"That sounds like something for my students, especially my Abend HTL class which is studying automation technology," I said to myself.

So if you need something technical to read about in English for your English activity journal (or just for fun!), here's the link which gives you a list of fascinating MentalFloss's science articles: http://mentalfloss.com/section/theautomator

Have fun browsing!! (I suggest starting here:  http://mentalfloss.com/article/88813/10-surprising-ways-robots-can-make-your-life-easier)

3C - Homework for Tuesday, December 6

For Tuesday, December 6, you should prepare a monologue about a technology diet (see handout from Thursday).  At least four students in each group will give a presentation.

Your presentation will be evaluated on
Task achievement (Erfüllung der Aufgabenstellung)
Free speaking
Language Range (Spektrum der gesprochenen Sprache)
Language Accuracy (Sprachrichtigkeit)

9C - Homework for Monday, December 5

1) There's a reading test.  You can practice for it by doing some of the Reading Exams in "Going for Finals" (the green book you got at the beginning of this year - it has the answers in the back to check your reading comprehension) or in Focus on Modern Technology 4/5 (I think there are also answers in the back of the book for Exam Training/Practices Exams),

2) Manuel K and Klemens have a symposium.

3) What does the "Internet of Things" mean to you?  Look up some examples on the Internet and be able to describe an example of this kind of technology.

4) You should have at least 9 entries in your activity journal.  If you have less than five, you probably should think about doing some English activities and writing about them.  It would be a shame if you got an F for Mitarbeit.

5) A lot of you didn't write a report.  That's too bad. Not only are you losing points, but I'm also not sure how you think you're going to pass the Schularbeit much less the written Matura on chutzpah alone.

Activity - Thermoforming Videos

Computational Thermoforming

Direct Print Thermoforming:

Two different ways of creating 3D images.  The first video comes from a team in Zürich.

Questions:
Do you do 3D printing at the HTL?
What kind of plastic manufacturing do you do in workshop?
Make a list of helpful vocabulary that you learned from watching the videos?
Make a list of the number of passive verbs that are used.  That's because instructional videos frequently use passive to get their point across.
Describe in your own words the process of making computational thermoforms.
Compare the techniques used in the two different videos.
What kind of objects do you think this technology could be used for?

Activity - Nutella

ARTICLE:  Nutella for breakfast?

Dr. Sandrock says:  "When I was growing up in Iowa, we didn't have Nutella.  Luckily, my father made regular trips to Germany and used to bring back small packs of Nutella from the breakfast buffet in his hotel. Later when I was in high school, Nutella came to the U.S.  I remember sitting in my bean bag chair in front of the television, watching music videos on MTV and eating Nutella out of the jar with a spoon! Nutella tastes a little different in the U.S. because it is made with hydrogenated oil (gehärtetes Fett) and therefore it can't be sold in health food stores."

QUESTIONS:
What is your experience with Nutella?
Do you like Nutella?
Does your family buy Nutella or do they buy a store brand (S Budget Nougatcreme)?
Did you know you can make your own Nutella?  Here's a recipe!
How do you eat Nutella? (on bread - what kind?  on fruit?  on ice cream?  straight out of the jar?)
Do you think Nutella is a healthy food?

3C - Homework for Tuesday, November 8

Your article should:
*  be around 250 words
*  have an interesting title
*  have a strong introduction (including definition of stereotype with an example)
*  have three body paragraphs (after the introduction and before the conclusion)
    1) how stereotype can lead to prejudice (with example)
    2) how exceptions (people who do not fit a stereotype) can open people's minds
    3) a good example of an exception (think of the videos we watched or use a personal example)
*  have a conclusion (Schlussabsatz) which encourages people to be open-minded (how could being       open-minded about people make the world a better place?)

If you did not write a first draft, you can still turn in an article on Tuesday.  Here is the original assignment:  http://ennsvalleyenglish.blogspot.co.at/2016/10/3c-homework-for-thursday-october-20.html

Activity - Make a Difference Day!

Call it "Make A Difference" "Pay it Forward" or a "Random Act of Kindness" - today (Saturday, October 22) is National Make A Difference Day!

Random acts of kindness don't have to be big.  They are as simple as giving someone an unexpected compliment, inviting someone to have an ice cream cone, doing yardwork for an elderly neighbor, making someone feel special or beautiful or loved.  The person who does the random act of kindness doesn't expect anything in return - they just want to make the world a better place.  They want to make a difference!

You can read more about Make a Difference Day here:  http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-make-a-difference-day-fourth-saturday-in-october/

And you can read about ways to get involved here: http://mentalfloss.com/article/87407/11-little-things-you-can-do-make-difference

Here are stories by people who have benefited from random acts of kindness:  https://notalwayshopeless.com/

QUESTIONS
Have you ever heard the term "Pay it Forward"?  Look up the term on the internet.  What does it mean?  Give an example.
There is also a movie called "Pay it Forward" - have you seen it?
Have you ever done something nice for someone you didn't know?
Has someone you didn't know ever done something nice for you?

**HOMEWORK FOR MONDAY, OCTOBER 24:  In your English Activity Journal, write a reply to the note from Dr. JoJo (below).  She wants to know about your current attitude toward school and what your plan is for getting all your work done this year.  Write a text in which you use the present simple and present continuous tenses in all different forms (statements, questions, negatives, as seen in the text we did in class).

Dear                       ,

It’s your final year of technical college in Austria, and there is so much to do!  You must be under a lot of stress.  What is your attitude to school right now? Are you able to get all your work done for your classes? Are you eating and sleeping okay?  You should take time to do things you want to do instead of working all day and all night.   Going out with friends or being with your family can often help you de-stress (although sometimes they can also distract you from your work).  Do you have any hobbies you can devote your attention to, so you aren’t always thinking about your diploma thesis or the prom?  Do you have a time management strategy?  Sorry to ask so many questions, but we haven’t had much time to chat!
